Dog Training: Moving your dog training to a public area
Once you are used to the basics of dog training and provided that your puppy or dog has had his vaccinations, then it is time to take him out into the big world. This is a whole new experience for him. Suddenly, his senses will be surrounded by many different sounds, sights, smells, and situations.
His attention and focus may be totally distracted and it will seem like all of the dog training that you have taught him so far has been lost. But don't worry, you just need to give him some time to adjust and get used to this strange new setting.
The best way to teach new dog training exercises is off the leash and in an open area. However, if your dog has not been in an open space before or he is not used to it, then you have to keep the leash on. Spend a few days walking him on it until he is familiar with the surroundings. Then you can begin outside dog training.
When he is used to this new area, start on his basic dog training exercises by using commands like "heel", "sit", and "stand". A very useful dog training command which can be executed anywhere is "watch me" while maintaining eye contact with him for about ten seconds while using the command. This is a very useful base for all types of dog training and also brings to your dog's attention the fact that it is time for his training to start.
Use hand movements to reinforce your voice commands, and then reward your dog with praise and a treat every time he performs the exercise correctly. However, avoid giving him treats all the time when dog training. He needs to know that he must behave and act in a certain way in order to get treats, but you can always give him praise and encouragement.
You must always end your dog training session with an exercise that he does well and finish it off with praise and treats, followed by a game that he really enjoys. Be spontaneous by not making the dog training sessions repeat themselves on a regular schedule.
When your dog is comfortable with his new dog training area and you are confident that he will not bolt, then it is time to let him off the leash. Go to a quiet place with no distractions and begin with your dog training using the same commands that he is familiar with. Dog training sessions should be no more than fifteen minutes for a puppy and just slightly more for an older dog. Only one person at a time should issue commands, otherwise, your dog may get confused and upset.
